What is OPAL Play?

We believe that play is a vital part of a happy, healthy childhood and an essential element of school life. Children spend around 20% of their time at school playing, so it is important that this time—and our outdoor environment—is used as effectively as possible. With this in mind, we have extended the play philosophy embedded in EYFS and have adopted the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach for KS1 & 2 children, which empowers children to lead their own play, using imagination and creativity with a wide range of natural, recycled, and open-ended resources.

Our aim is to provide consistently high-quality, sustainable play opportunities for every child. We have carefully developed our outdoor spaces, equipment, and resources to ensure they are inclusive and offer a rich variety of accessible experiences. OPAL creates an environment where all children feel confident and comfortable expressing themselves, regardless of their interests or abilities.

Since beginning our OPAL journey in Spring 2024, we have transformed our outdoor provision into a dynamic and engaging space that children can enjoy in all weathers. From building with large loose parts, to imaginative role play in the Jubilee Garden and creative activities in the Nature Cafe (Mud kitchen), there is something for everyone alongside traditional playground experiences. Through play, they grow into confident and enthusiastic creators, thinkers, and explorers.

We recognise that play plays a crucial role in supporting children’s health, happiness, and overall wellbeing. Through these experiences, children become more active and develop key life skills such as independence, confidence, imagination, cooperation, problem-solving, and risk awareness. These qualities closely reflect and support our core school values and school motto.

“I thought I’d send a message to show my appreciation for the development of the outdoor area within Langley Primary School. Only last week my son was chatting about how good his lunchtimes are now with so many activities for him to choose from and enjoy every day. I really appreciate having such a variety of sports available and other activities such as den building and a quiet place to read at lunchtime. Being a teacher myself, I understand this is not available in a lot of schools, so thank you for all the hard work, time and effort that has been put into improving the outdoor facilities.
