This week in Science, Year 5 have been investigating friction and exploring the question: “What is the friction between different surfaces?”

The children learnt that friction is a force that acts between two surfaces and can slow down or make it more difficult for an object to move. They used force meters to measure the force needed to pull an object across a range of different surfaces.

Before carrying out the investigation, the children made predictions about which surfaces would create the most and least friction. They then worked scientifically to carry out a fair test, carefully recording their measurements and comparing their results.

We discovered that, generally, rougher surfaces created more friction, while smoother surfaces allowed the object to move more easily.
