This week in Year 1, we have been very busy extending our number knowledge as we begin an exciting new maths unit focused on counting from 50 to 100. The children have shown great enthusiasm as they explore larger numbers, building on their previous learning and developing much stronger confidence in counting.

Throughout our lessons, we have been practising counting forwards and backwards within this range, recognising number patterns, and identifying what comes before and after a given number. We have used a variety of practical resources and fun activities to help the children visualise numbers and understand how they connect. It has been wonderful to see them becoming more secure and independent as they work with these bigger numbers.

To support your child at home, we encourage you to practise counting together regularly. Simple activities such as counting forwards from different starting points (for example, 53 to 70) or counting backwards from 100 can make a big difference. You could try counting in the car, while walking, or as part of a daily routine—short, frequent practice helps build confidence and fluency.

The more opportunities children have to hear and use numbers up to 100, the more confident they will become as we continue through this unit. Thank you for your ongoing support—it really helps to reinforce the learning taking place in school.

We are very proud of all the progress Year 1 has already made and look forward to seeing their confidence with numbers continue to grow!
