In Year 3, we stepped back in time to learn about Ancient Egypt and the fascinating process of mummification. Instead of mummifying people, we used tomatoes to safely explore how mummification worked long ago.

We learned that the Ancient Egyptians believed mummification was important so bodies could be preserved for the afterlife. They used natural materials to dry the body and stop it from rotting.

🍅 Mummifying Our Tomatoes

We carefully followed each step, just like Ancient Egyptian embalmers:

  • First, we scooped out the inside of the tomatoes
  • Next, we packed them with salt and bicarbonate of soda to help dry them out
  • Then, we wrapped our tomatoes in bandages, making them look like tiny mummies!

We worked carefully, talked about what we were doing, and thought about why each step was important.

What We Learned

  • Salt helps remove moisture
  • Drying things out helps preserve them
  • Mummification was a long and careful process
  • Historians learn by trying things out and asking question
