This week, our school has been buzzing with excitement as we launched Science Week—a celebration of curiosity, creativity, and the incredible world around us! We kicked things off with a whole-school assembly all about curiosity and how asking questions can lead to amazing discoveries. The children were inspired by the incredible story of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to go into space. Her journey—from a curious child who loved science and dance to a NASA astronaut—reminded us all that with passion and determination, anything is possible.

Throughout the day, our classrooms and corridors have been transformed into hubs of scientific wonder. We’ve been lucky to welcome visitors from National Grid, who brought electrifying workshops and hands-on activities for every year group. Children explored how circuits work—some even made their own potato batteries and were amazed to see how a simple vegetable can power a light! Others took part in storytelling and drama sessions that brought to life the journey of electricity, from spinning wind turbines to shining solar panels. Along the way, pupils discovered smart energy-saving ideas they can use at school and at home.

There were challenges too! Children took on the exciting task of investigating how to make a light bulb brighter or dimmer, experimenting with wires, bulbs, batteries, and switches to find the best solutions. Our younger learners had a very special treat—they met Griddles the Bear, who helped them explore electricity in a fun and friendly way.

It’s been a wonderful week full of questions, experiments, teamwork, and “wow!” moments.

Don’t forget to bring your Big Science Challenge entries into school by Monday 9th March! We can’t wait to see the amazing investigations, models, experiments and creative ideas you’ve been working on at home.

All entries handed in by Monday will be considered for a special opportunity to join me at Tudor Grange Solihull, where selected projects will be showcased alongside work from other schools. Your creations will also be proudly shared with your friends and teachers here at school so everyone can celebrate your hard work.
