Year 3 Science – Exploring Food Packaging in Year 3!
In Year 3 Science, we have been learning all about nutrition, healthy eating, and how to make good food choices. As part of our work, the children explored a wide range of real food packaging to discover what information is hidden on labels. They looked carefully at ingredients lists, nutrition tables, and symbols such as traffic‑light colours. The class enjoyed comparing different foods to find out which ones contained the most sugar, salt, or fat, and which options were healthier.
The children were brilliant detectives—working in teams, asking questions, and spotting patterns in the data. They found surprises too, such as foods that look healthy but contain unexpected ingredients! This activity helped them understand how packaging can guide us toward making smarter choices about what we eat. It also linked beautifully with our learning about the human body and why we need a balanced diet to stay strong and healthy.
Year 3 loved becoming “Food Label Investigators,” and they’re now much more confident at reading packaging and talking about what makes a nutritious meal.

We ordered the breakfast cereals depending on their sugar content per 100g… there were some surprises!
