Today in 6W children developed their conceptual understanding of the circulatory system by dissecting a pigs heart. The children were a huge support to each other and everyone had a role to play. At first, they identified the superior vena cava, aorta, pulmonary veins and arteries. By placing straws into the openings it allowed them to identify which part of the heart to cut first. They proceeded to cut down the interventricular sulcus which opened up the opportunity to see into the chambers of the heart. They particularly enjoyed tugging on the heart strings. Pigs hearts are similar in size to human hearts which gave the children a real life comparison. The children were fascinated by the experience and inspired (future heart surgeons). A wonderful experience and true hands on science! well done all, your maturity was amazing!
