Todays, Jim Goldstraw visited Langley to discuss Remembrance. Year 5 & 6 were fortune to have extra time with Jim where he showed them artefacts and discussed their importance during WW1. The children had a great time handling the artefacts, asked many questions showing great curiosity and were discussing their thoughts and opinions.

We had the chance to learn about aspects of the war that we had not known before such as

-the propaganda poster enticing men to go to war

-that women turned yellow from some of the factories that created the ammunition. They were then known as Canary Girls.

-that many soldiers died by drowning simply from falling forwards in the trenches whilst carrying all their equipment and not being able to get up.

-that soldiers from different nationalities and religions were allied with the British, fought alongside each other and are remembered during Remembrance.

-that a soldier had to carry everything that he needed and this was a huge weight to bear

-the original gas masks used by soldiers were made using asbestos
